How can AI respect children’s best interests? As digital technologies reshape childhood, we must ask: Are we designing AI with children’s rights at the center? UNICEF Innocenti’s latest consultations reveal critical insights: ✅ Children want clarity and fairness – Terms and conditions should be understandable and culturally relevant. ✅ Safety ≠ the only right – Privacy, participation, and freedom of expression matter just as much. ✅ AI impacts development – Emotional well-being, autonomy, and critical thinking must guide design choices. ✅ Co-creation is key – Platforms should involve children in shaping digital spaces that reflect diverse contexts. What’s next? Smarter, context-sensitive tools for safety without compromising autonomy. Stronger enforcement of existing regulations and child-centered redress systems. Transparent reporting and accountability from tech companies. Best interests should never be a checkbox. They must guide every decision affecting children online. AI must empower - not exploit - young minds. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eHdFJgfZ #AI #ChildRights

Video series: Ghana’s tech lab – Part 5 This week, in our ongoing video series produced by UNICEF StartUp Lab and UNICEF Ghana, we introduce ASANKA, a platform that brings offline access for students and teachers to academic content with little or no internet connectivity. In collaboration with UNICEF, ASANKA offers curriculum-aligned lessons, videos, and interactive exercises, even offline. This partnership reflects UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child has access to quality education. New partnership makes information accessible to every child Millions of children around the world face barriers to understanding written content due to cognitive differences, disabilities, or reading challenges. This limits their ability to access essential information and participate fully in society. UNICEF is working with ETH Zurich to develop EasyRead, which is an open source GenAI solution that helps children overcome these barriers. EasyRead uses simplified language, logical structure, supportive visuals, and accessible layouts to make content easier to understand. By making digital information more inclusive, we aim to ensure that every child, regardless of ability, can learn, engage, and thrive. Last week in Luxembourg, we kicked off the SafeChild TeamOne upskilling event, an important step in UNICEF’s digital transformation. Over 80 Digital Advisors from more than 70 countries came together to strengthen our ability to build safe, secure, and responsible digital systems for children, including in emergencies. We’re grateful to the Government of Luxembourg (Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade ) Max Lamesch, Director of Humanitarian Affairs, for their generous support. Their partnership is helping UNICEF respond to growing digital demands with agility and impact. Thanks also to our UNICEF organizing team for making this event a success. From AI and cybersecurity to digital education, TeamOne is proving what collaboration and continuous learning can achieve. Looking ahead, I am proud of the strong network of Digital Advisors that we are building, ready to advance child rights in the digital age and support country offices worldwide. SafeChild is a long-term investment in the systems, skills, and safeguards children need. #luxaid #safechild

SafeChild/TeamOne Week 2 Opens in Luxembourg! This week continues UNICEF’s commitment to strengthening digital capacity to maximize results for children everywhere. Supported by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, the SafeChild initiative brings together UNICEF digital advisors to Luxembourg to build skills, share expertise, and advance responsible digital programmes, including cybersecurity and digital guardrails. During the opening session, Max Lamesch, Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the group with reflections on Luxembourg’s legacy and relevance: “Luxembourg, the home of the Schengen agreement, was once a fortress and is now a symbol of free movement,” said Max Lamesch. “This is a kind of symbol for digital structures. The world is evolving fast. To respond and prevent effectively, we must stay connected to expertise and act responsibly.” UNICEF Global CIO Kaan Cetinturk encouraged staff to be active contributors to TeamOne, UNICEF’s new operating model for digital programme support to country offices. “You will be upskilled for your own work, but also to support others,” said Kaan. “This time here is about learning. When you return to your offices, raise it one level above, to your supervisors, to your government counterparts. You are not alone, you have the power of TeamOne. And remember to talk about your successes.” Over the next days, staff will engage in hands-on sessions and simulations to strengthen UNICEF’s digital impact and digital guardrails, in order to better protect child rights everywhere. #digitaltechnology #luxaid
